Retrospective
The films by Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub and some friends
October 15 - November 5, 2017
The last retrospective of the films by Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub in Berlin dates back 27 years. In April and May 1990, cinema Arsenal at Welserstraße presented the complete oeuvre until then. Premiering in the program was their Cézanne in conversation with Joachim Gasquet (1989). "You probably know that the entire mountain which Cézanne had known, loved and painted, has been destroyed, burnt", wrote Danièle Huillet to their friend Alf Bold, who organized the retrospective. "I don't need to describe to you our sadness; how instead of being cheerful we are actullay afraid to make this 17th film."
An indispensable part of "Tell it to the Stones" is a complete retrospective of the films by Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub. It begins on October 15 at Akademie der Künste on Hanseatenweg and then continous its journey chronologically to cinema Brotfabrik (Oct 19 - 23), Zeughauskino (Oct 25 - Nov 3), and fsk (Nov 4&5). The program is complemented by a selection of films which are important because they represent friendships and shared concerns.
For the retrospective, fhe films by Huillet and Straub are provided by Stiftung Deutsche Kinemathek, Arsenal – Institute for Film and Video Art, Zeughauskino (German History Museum, Berlin), Stadtkino Vienna, Austrian Film Museum, Film Museum Munich, and BELVA Film. Whenever possible, analogue 35mm prints will be used.
